MODULES
ROLLING STOCK VEHICLES
12 lessons
This module will provide students with a general knowledge of rolling stock. Topics covered will include the different types of rolling stock, the main systems and their characteristics, and the design. There will also be a general introduction to the regulatory environment. The module will also cover the fundamental typologies and architectures of locomotives, EMUs/DMUs and coaches, as well as their life cycles, in Swiss, European and other cross-border operations.
Mechanical Systems
36 lessons
In this module, students will learn about the mechanical components of vehicle structures, as well as the subcomponents associated with them. They will also be introduced to modelling loads, fatigue, stability, and durability. Additionally, they will learn about mechanical safety equipment and the interaction between mechanical and non-mechanical systems. Design, engineering, production and maintenance aspects will also be covered.
Electrical Systems
36 lessons
We will address end-to-end traction and auxiliary electrics, from the pantograph to the technical system power supply and the passenger systems, as well as other multi-system contexts. Students will learn about converters, transformers, low-, mid- and high-voltage networks, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and Train Control & Management System (TCMS) power supply. They will also learn the fundamentals of interaction between the vehicle and the main electrical system infrastructure. We will also examine power distribution and describe and evaluate all non-safety-relevant electronic systems.
Traction Systems
36 lessons
We will start with an overview of the traditional approach to electric and thermal traction systems. To expand our knowledge further, we will conclude with an introduction to battery-powered and hybrid systems, as well as fuel cell technology. We will describe the fundamentals, definitions, interfaces and requirements of all traction systems, providing an overview of drive systems and their related subsystems. The fundamentals of traction-wheel-track interactions will also be covered.
Brake, Wheel-sets & Boogie
36 lessons
We will take a deep dive into this specific topic, analysing the different types of system available and possible further developments. The module will then focus on braking physics, wheel and axle engineering, and boogie dynamics. Finally, we will consider the size of stopping distances, how to interpret wear and fatigue, and how to improve stability and ride quality.
Vehicle Control & Digital Systems
36 lessons
This module will cover all safety-relevant systems, with a focus on the engineering and operational aspects of these systems. We will analyse how control systems operate and relate to other systems, such as infrastructure, vehicles and the cloud. We will also examine how they are configured. Additionally, we will review environmental and configuration control, and explore potential methods for integrating software and hardware from various providers. The integration strategies and processes involved will also be covered. The module will conclude with an introduction to ATO. Possible topics include: TCMS architectures, onboard safety systems (e.g. ETCS), train buses and cybersecurity.
WORKSHOPS & VISITS
Administration, Regulations & Digital
3 lessons
In this short session, we will take a refreshing look at the administrative side of the course. We will explain the course regulations and the platform used, as well as how to access it and the available libraries. In addition, we will show you where to find help. Then, we will demonstrate the main features and the most important applications, showing you how to benefit from them. This module will conclude with a Q&A session.
Please note that during the first 1.5 days (extendable to three days), the lecturer will be available to answer specific questions and provide on-site assistance to any students who require it.
Mobility Systems, Concepts & TecH
8 lessons
We will take an in-depth look at multi-modality, integrated mobility, MaaS and other successful mobility concepts in Switzerland and worldwide. We will examine the strategic, design, operational and maintenance aspects of these systems and technologies. Swiss examples will be used as a basis for discussion.
Mobility AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
8 lessons
This is a new workshop focusing on how AI can help us and change the way we approach mobility. We will cover topics such as the technical background, strategies for implementing AI within a company and agent prompting, as well as many other aspects of AI that can impact our professional lives. We will also explore how to build a strong, human-centric AI system. We believe that putting a person at the heart of AI is key to success.
Future Mobility
8 lessons
This engaging and innovative workshop will cover a range of topics, including ATO, decarbonisation, automation, digital twins, potential future habitats, recent discoveries, urban planning with a focus on mobility and safety in the digital age. With a focus on current and future technologies, the workshop will explore potential modes of travel in the near and distant future.
